Moving to Kefalonia, Greece

That's it, we had had enough, totally dissatisfied and dissallusioned by life in this country, and now rumours of huge council tax increases over the next few years coupled with this Government's love of stealth taxes are now sufficient reasons to just upsticks and head south with the swallows.
We currently pay £108 a month to local government just to get our bins emptied. Personally we would rather staple our tongues to the floor rather than go on paying this. Why do we do it? This country is just rip off Britain these days. Not a political statement, just the way my partner (Judi) and I feel.
:@
We have paid our last big tax bill to Government. centrally and locally. Sadly capital gains being the beast it is, we have to move out gradually or pay more huge sums to the treasury. As far as we are concerned Gordon can take a hike.
:@ :@ :@
I know we are not alone in our thinking and it is the higher rated tax payers who are flocking to the sun. We are lucky I understand that, disallusionment is no respector of collar colour. However, regretfully the opportunity to act is. I feel for our students and young people stuck here, they stand no chance these days, starting life saddled with huge debt is no incentive to even try, add that to the need to establish their own home at prices that are crazy, they stand no chance whatsoever, and hanging around knowing they are waiting for Mum and Dad to die....... :-}
I am starting to encourage my 12 year old son to be a plumber, it pays better these days, and he will never be out of work.
With all of this in mind we have just purchased a patch of rocks and 6 Olive trees in Makriotika near Agia Efimia in Kefalonia Greece. (Agia Efimia was one of the locations where they made Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and where the cast stayed) We have a planning meeting with a builder and architect in September and hope building will start soon afterwards. You can see our patch of rocks and follow our efforts, successes, disasters and mistakes online at www.astro-holidays.com/buildingthedream.html
If other people feel the way Judi and I do please let us know. We would love to share experiences over the next year or so.
Paul & Judi

Hi Paul & Judi !
What a coincidence. I was just searching the web and found your post. My partner and I can only agree with your views and have decided a short while ago that now is the time to start the early planning of our move abroad to ............ Kefalonia !!!!
We have been going there for years and love the place. We also live in Hertfordshire.
It would be great to get in contact with you. Please feel free to e-mail us at p.michaelsen@virgin.net and I will send you my telephone number.
All the best
Chrissie & Per

There must be something in the air ! or is it the fear of Gordon Brown, either way .. get me out of this country, We have had enough, I remember those famous words once used by the labour goverment Tax Tax Tax, Wow they kept to there word for once! Iown a buisness in london with about 22 staff its very well established and thankfully we just keep our heads out of water, but the taxes we pay and the Vat /and Paye/business rates its very hard to make a profit, and now with the congestion charges the parking metres and speed cameras the goverment have you every way, and all the decent folk i know are either moving abroad or talking about leaving.... good luck to them Sunny England is not so sunny no more, and lets be honest i am tired of paying taxes to house and pay for immigrants moving here with either false papers or just here to take take take it makes me feel sick to think that my hard earned money is used for them, when our own children will never be able to afford a property here unless the parents are in a position to support them.
Well here is the good news !! Me and my Partner went to kefalonia this year ...guess what!! yes we fell in love with the island, we were there for one week only .. we went to remax estate agents, viewed a few villas, fell in love with one, put an offer in, went to a solicitor, opened a bank acount, and we are now expecting to complete very soon, we have choosen Lourdata we will not completly move there yet as we have youngish children and buisness comitments but at least we will be out of here for at least 2 months a year, what a fantastic place to live or stay in.
Paul Judi ....dont tell too many people about it keep it a secret, we dont want to many brits following us there Ha Ha
I wish you all the luck in your adventure !! I am reading up with all the laws there, so if you would like to correspond, please let me know there will certain things we both will need to find out...maybe two heads are beter than one.
Regards John & Sunita
