Idea [I] Family History. Eric Boon of Chatteris. Boxer 1937
Reply Quote
I am researching the family of Eric Boon of Chatteris who won the British Lightweight Boxing Championship in 1937, whose family I believe is related to mine - who also came from Chatteris. (my parents were Joe Emery and Ellen Maria Cave who married in Chatteris in 1919). Any information about Eric's parents and/or his ancestry would be gratefully received.

Hi Joe

My grandfather from my mothers side Stanley Binder was a chatteris boy whos father (James)Arthur Binder was the person responsible for getting Eric into Boxing i have only been speaking to him 10 minutes ago and he was telling me how his father watched from his house opposite Erics  school, Eric was fighting with a lad, and he told him to come along to the gym that my great granfather ran,  He tells me that he trained him for some time until he was taken under the wing of Jack Sullivans but he my  grandfather and great grandfather remained  friends for many years even driving his white jaguar around when he was forbidden to drive by his manager before a fight. My grandad tells me that he was at the Omar Kouidri fight with Eric, at the Albert hall. I will have to ask him some more details but im sure he would be able to shed some light on some un answered questions. feel free to drop me a line if you have some questions, i cant guarantee but i dont mind asking.

 Good Luck

Hello Joe

I have been trying to find a connection between my wifes family and Eric Boon of Chatteris - as my mother in-law assures me that Eric was a cousin of her late (* husband ) . I gather that their is little know about her husbands family past before their marriage and as he was in the RAF for 22 years he may not have kept in touch with them .However this information maybe of some use to you .

From the 1901 census

Elsie M Boon born 1895 in Stockwell London (* is his mother).

Hilda G Boon born 1898 and Maud E Boon born 1900 both in Stockwell were her sisters.

James Boon born 1891 in Stockwell was her brother.

Their parents were James Boon born 1863 in Pettistree Suffolk and Mary Boon (formerly Nunn) born 1868 Charsfield Suffolk

(They were married 1890 at Charsfield)and shortly after were living in London.)

(The only possble connection would be James boon born 1891 if he returned to Suffolk ?)

(Secondly I  think i found out  Eric Boons mothers maiden name was Franklein or Franklin ? )

So good luck  - and please reply if you do find any details ref the above.-

I am afraid i cannot tell you very much only what i remember being told as a child.

Eric was related to my Grandmother on my Fathers side. I cannot remember if she said he was her half brother or step brother. All i know is that i have his wallet that was handed down to myself.

I hope this is of some help

Hi. I too have a close interest in the family of Eric Boon. I have previously made contact with some of his relatives, I believe he was from a large family, many of whom now live in the area of Littleport. I must tread carefully though as my father was the illegitimate son of a man called Eric Boon, who was not however the boxer Eric Boon, but may have been a nephew. I'm told his name was actually John Boon. He was a Tank Seargeant who saw action all over Europe during WWII. He met my grandmother at Bridge-of-Don barracks near Aberdeen in 1946. She was in the ATS. She fell pregnant and they were going to get married but he rather let her down. Anyway, I really want to trace my male line, I'm not sure if I want to meet any of the family, as it's possible he later did marry and have children, and that could upset people. However, if anyone can help me fit the jigsaw pieces together I'd be delighted. These things needn't be kept secret in this day and age!

I knew Eric when he lived in Soham, He earned a megre living talking his projector and old boxing films around the country. He was a really nice bloke, sadly I lost contact with him after I moved from Soham. It was about 1976 whenI last saw him, but seeing this thread bought a few memories back. Alan.

Hi Ollie,

It is quite possible then that your grandad remembers my dad too, Jack Mayes of Wenny Road Chatteris.  He and Eric were cousins.  Eric's sister, Brenda still lives in Chatteris, not sure of the address as with the Christmas cards.  I still get a card from Aunt Brenda every year.  My dad's sister left Chatteris after marrying Jack Gavin and moved to Aberdeen.  My dad's parents were Donald and Lily Mayes and grandad was a caretaker for a school in Chatteris not sure if it was the one on the corner of Wenny Road.

I have tried to research the family tree, as Aunt Brenda, bless her, is not very forthcoming with names etc.  To be honest I knew about Uncle Eric and that my dad did a bit of boxing but being a girl never found it that thrilling.  Not until I had sons of my own who all joined the Grenadiers and one of which tried out for the boxing team did I ever mention it and of course their interest came to the fore.  I do have a copy of all Uncle Eric's fights that I obtained, for a price, from the boxing federation.  Quite some list.  Unfortunately my dad died in 1982 so have not been able to get answeres.  Both their sisters say the same thing to me, "we were young girls and not at all interested in what our brother was doing".  For fear of upsetting two elderly aunts, I shut up.

Joe,
My late Father, Harry "kid" Silver was best friends with Eric Boon. They were called the inseperables. Both boxed for Joe Solomon in London. I've got  newspaper cuttings and boxing programmes with photos of them together. Happy to email copies.  My father married Eric's wife's cousin Marjorie in 1941. They had a baby boy called David but divorced during the war, she went to Canada with a Canadian soldier.
My Father lived in Australia from the early 1950's. I found out only recently that Eric had lived only a couple of miles away. They never knew. My Father died a month ago and it has encouraged me to find out more about his past, which includes a half brother I've never met.
