Party Policies: North Herts District Council Elections 2008

The Labour and Co-operative Party

Labour will release public land and money to build more high-quality affordable houses and starter homes, and work with housing partnerships to make more low cost homes and homes for rent available.

Labour will immediately restore the dial-a-ride funding and work in partnership with the rail network to provide better timetables and decent amenities at rail stations, particularly for people with disabilities.

Labour will speed up the introduction of separate door step collection of plastics, cans and kitchen waste and improve help for people to make their homes energy efficient.

Labour will oppose cramming of town sites and building on our valued green belt, demand the building of homes that cater for the mixed needs of the local community, including starter homes for families, and preserve our heritage and stop the disposal of community and historic buildings.

Labour will consult fully on the possible transfer of council properties such as halls and markets to the community, and listen to the needs of individuals and groups through area committees, surgeries and community liaison events with all of the important service providers.

Labour will give young people a voice in decisions and work closely with them and community partners to provide improved youth facilities. Labour will also reduce the prices for play scheme places.
