Party Policies: Stevenage District Council Elections 2008
Liberal Democrats
OPPOSITION
The second largest party since 1982, Liberal Democrats are an effective, responsible, challenging opposition to Labour’s domination of Stevenage Council.
The smaller Conservative group say little.
Examples: we initiated Fair Trade, ATM Privacy Boxes, all party Mayors.
COUNCIL TAX
Conservatives invented it -Â they and Labour increased it!
Abolish Council Tax -Â replace it with a fair system, based on ability to pay -Â return Business Rates to councils.
INCOME TAX RISE
Oppose Labour’s 10 p rise for the lower paid.
STEVENAGE COUNCIL CUTS
We warned high spending would mean cuts in Stevenage – if Labour had tackled the problem sooner, the cuts would be less severe.
Consultation needed with users before imposing cuts – e.g. large car park increases need reviewing.
ENVIRONMENT
We want better
Clearing of litter, fly tipping, graffiti.
Hedge, tree, grass cutting.
Residents’ parking schemes.
Recycling – Labour have STILL no plastics, food waste or card collections.
Action on plastic bags – Labour refused.
ROADS
Full, permanent repairs needed - Conservative HCC neglected them.
SCHOOLS
We acted when HCC Tories bungled plans for the new Thomas Alleyne building.
TOWN CENTRE
- Â Proposed new bus station should be nearer shops.
YOUNGSTERS
- Strongly support provision of youth facilities –we made this a priority for budgets we control.
- Support a skate park site.
WE NEVER FORGET IT IS YOUR MONEY!
