The Herts Advertiser

The Herts Advertiser has always supported charities in general terms through the publicity they give both prior to events and afterwards.

However several years ago they decided to adopt Grove House day hospice in St Albans as their special charity so that it could raise its profile and become independent in 2004 - “the single best action we have done”, according to the charity's chief executive. This was partly because cancer touches so many people's lives these days and also because the charity provides so many services and support which would not be available elsewhere.

The Herts Advertiser continues to give a dedicated position each week to Grove House. The charity, which stands in the grounds of St Albans City Hospital and continues to expand its services - it now plans to provide 24-hour home care. This year it needs to raise more than £800,000 and to meet its targets a Herts 10K Challenge race was organised for the first time last October. The Herts Advertiser helped promote it and 1,000 runners took part with £60,000 being raised for Grove House. This year they have promoted the event more strongly and the entries have doubled to 2,000. The charity hopes to raise £100,000 from this years' event.

Cycle Ride
A family takes part in the Rotary Annual Cycle Ride

14 years ago the three Rotary Clubs in St Albans approached The Herts Advertiser to help them start an annual Charity Cycle Ride. This has been a huge success right from the first ride, attracting up to 1,600 cyclists, many of them children and families, to the event each May and it raises more than £40,000 each year for the Rotary Clubs' selected charities.

The Herts Advertiser continues to promote dozens of individuals each year in their efforts to raise money for various charities by publicising their efforts and giving links through which readers can support them.
